Ashley Tisdale, Dakota Johnson, Zooey Deschanel, and more are some of the best-known celebrities that wear fringe/curtain bangs as their trademark look. More recently, this look has become a trend that celebrities such as Sophie Turner, Hailey Bieber, and Zendaya have been wearing for a few weeks and then changing back to their traditional looks.
This look has gained more popularity this summer because it is an excellent way to stave off the summer heat by keeping your hair light and airy. Not only that, but it frames the face and gives the hair a “naturally” messy look while still looking unkempt and elegant.
Most recently, we are seeing that celebrities with this look are using fringe/curtain bangs in conjunction with some “beachy” waves, adding to that quintessential summer look and giving the hair more volume and bounce.
Going blonde for the summer is a tale as old as time. Celebrities are constantly colouring their hair blonde for the summer to match the sunny weather.
What’s becoming more popular this summer amongst stars is colouring their hair blonde and also getting a bob cut. Kourtney Kardashian is the front-runner for this look right now and has gone for a perfect bob cut with a natural-looking blonde colouring.
Not only is this look perfect for summer as it is simple to maintain and matches the brightness that summer brings, but it is also the smart choice to keep you from overheating. With less hair on your shoulders and a lighter colour that doesn’t attract heat as much, it’s the optimal look for those hot summer days.
Opting for a bob in the heat is one of the best ways to keep cool this summer. To elevate this look, some celebrities have been going for a bob and side-sweeping their bangs while also adding “beachy” waves.
Charlize Theron is heading up this look by rocking a gorgeous blonde bob with side-swept bangs and wavy hair. It is such a glamorous look to head into summer with as it is a much more manageable and comfortable style in the hot and humid weather, while also adding an elevated feel to the hair.
To allow for better airflow around the neck and shoulders to reduce heat build-up and to dress up your style this summer, opt for a bob cut with side-swept bangs!
Staying on theme with all the bob cuts we are seeing this summer, another great way to style this look is by adding lighter highlights to the front of the hair. Someone who is doing this really well at the moment is Hailey Bieber.
Although Hailey is known for her signature blonde look, she has recently coloured her hair brown, chopped it into a bob, and added some lighter brown highlights to the front of her face.
This look captures summer's essence by framing the face and bringing some light to a darker hair colour. Adding light waves to this hairstyle can tie in that summery vibe.
It’s no secret that summer is one of the best times of the year for a bold new hair colour. That’s when all the colours in clothing, makeup, and hair come out to match the vibrancy of the season.
Chloe Bailey, very reminiscent of her sister, Halle, in the new Little Mermaid movie, has gone bold and bright this summer by colouring her hair a striking red colour. Not only that, but she has added extensions to make the look pop even more.
Even though this may be a more eccentric look, Bailey’s statement goes to show that there is no better time to make a drastic and fun change than summer!
If bob cuts aren’t your thing, but you still feel like chopping off some hair to keep the heat off your neck and shoulders this summer, try a pixie cut, like Julia Garner.
Julia Garner is taking the pixie cut to a whole new level by adding some asymmetrical bangs and having a more “chopped” look. This choppiness gives this hairstyle an edgier feel to it and gives it a more naturally messy feel and appearance.
To get some inspiration for what look you should try out this summer, look no further than some of your favourite celebrities. Chloe Bailey, Ashley Tisdale, Hailey Bieber, and more are just some of the stars who have made drastic and subtle changes to their hairstyles in preparation for the warmer months. No matter what look you want to try this summer, SJ Forbes can help. Book your appointment today to get your summer look started!

]]>Even though you are going to a hair salon, it is important to wash your hair the night before coming for your appointment. Oily and greasy hair is hard to style and won’t turn out accurate results for your intended look. Washing your hair the night before you arrive and not the day of is equally as important because having wet or damp hair will affect the styling of your hair, will slow the process down and will ultimately make it more difficult for your stylist to work with.
Having an idea of what you want for your special day is extremely helpful to your stylist. It saves you both time and frustration. Knowing if you are going for an up-do, braided hair, long and natural hair, or anything else gives you and your stylist a good starting point. It is also important to come to your appointment with an open mind. It’s okay to change your mind midway through or after your appointment– this is the entire premise for a trial appointment.
This tip may seem obvious, but when worrying so much about our hair appointment, we often forget that what we wear to the appointment may be just as important. If you have just sat for a few hours getting your hair all styled and then need to try on clothing to test out how the hair looks with a few different coloured pieces, the last thing you want is your shirt to catch on your hair. Make sure you bring something with you that can easily go over your head so you don’t damage the masterpiece your stylist spent hours creating or the hours you spent waiting!
To better bring your vision to life, wear white on the day of your hair consultation. That way, once your hair is completed, you can see how you will look on your wedding day with a white dress. A top or dress that has a similar neckline to your wedding dress is ideal so you can gauge how your hair will look and which style will suit you best. Wearing colours to your consultation may distract you from the look and may potentially throw you off, so ensure you are wearing a similar colour and style to your appointment as you would to your wedding day (a toned-down version of course).
This is not the time to be shy. When it comes to your wedding, it’s important to communicate with your stylist about your vision and preferences. At the end of the day, the stylist wants to bring your image to life and if you are unhappy with how something looks, ensure you speak up. It’s also common for brides to be at their consultation with a pre-imagined idea of what they want their hair to look like, but midway through, they change their minds. It’s completely fine to do so, as long as you discuss the best course of action with your stylist and work together to create something that suits you.
If you plan on wearing a veil, crown, or any other headpiece or accessory on the day of your wedding, we recommend bringing those items to your consultation. Bringing these along with you will give you and your stylist a better idea of how your hair will look on the day of your wedding and will give you both a better understanding of how to work your hair around your accessories. Even if you end up not incorporating any accessories into your hair on your wedding day, it’s better to be safe than sorry!
With such an important event as your wedding is it imperative that you book a wedding hair consultation before your big day to test out the different hairstyles you are considering. You may even surprise yourself and change your mind midway through the appointment and opt for a style you never thought you would go for. Building a rapport with your stylist and keeping that line of communication open and honest is the best way to ensure that you leave the salon happy and walk down the aisle with your dream hairdo. Even though it may be tempting to wash your hair every day to “remove” the day, it’s much healthier for your hair if you give it a break between washes. The standard amount for washing hair is 2-3 times per week. Everyone has different hair and depending on the type of hair you have can also impact how often or infrequently you should be washing it. For oily scalps and hair, it is recommended to be washing your hair every day, for dry scalps and hair, every 5-7 days, for thin hair, every other day, for curly or wavy hair, every 4-5 days and thick hair, once a week is enough. This is all dependent on how you want your hair to look and feel and the different types of hair you have.
Giving your hair a break doesn’t stop at washing, it also applies to adding heat to your hair. Constantly putting heat on your hair in the form of curlers, straighteners and hair dryers, can damage your hair and leave it looking broken and weakened. Just like you, your hair needs a break now and then too!
When we shampoo our hair, we are removing dirt and other contaminants from our hair. This, in turn, takes away lots of natural oils that we need for us to grow healthy hair. This is why we use conditioner because it replenishes and replaces the oils stripped away by shampoo. When you use a 2 in 1 shampoo-conditioner, you are essentially trying to do two opposite things at once: replace moisture in your hair (with conditioner) while taking away the oil in your hair (with shampoo).
These two products work together to make your hair look and stay healthy for longer periods, but when combined into one product, they can, at best, leave you with no results, and at worst, leave your hair looking and feeling damaged.
There are many reasons why having regular trims is beneficial to your hair's health and growth. One of these is that having your hair trimmed regularly can encourage your hair to grow more. When you have split ends on your hair, it can stop your hair from growing, so having those split ends trimmed every few months allows your hair to grow longer.
For those with curly hair, having regular trims can help to de-tangle your hair as well! When your hair is damaged, it is harder to maintain and style, so having those trims regularly can contribute to keeping your hair tangle-free! Above all, having regular trims keeps your hair looking healthier, so book your cut today with SJ Forbes!
Just like makeup brushes and toothbrushes, hair brushes and combs need to be cleaned and swapped out regularly. With repeated uses, hair brushes and combs accumulate product residue, dust, dead skin cells and oils. When spending on expensive hair care products, it’s important to remember that all of that can be null and void if your hair brush and combs are dirty and in need of cleaning.
You can effectively clean your hair products by placing them in a bin of soapy hot water and letting them soak for about 5 minutes. After that, just let them air dry and they are all ready to be used again! This process is recommended to be done once every week to ensure you are keeping your hair as healthy as possible.
There are plenty of other dos and don’ts when it comes to taking care of and maintaining your hair health. With so many products and information in the market, it is hard to discern what is actually helping your hair and what is ultimately hurting it. It’s always important to speak to your stylist when you go in for trims and appointments to avoid misconceptions. Book with SJ Forbes today so we can put your hair health first and ensure it looks and feels the best it can!

For an effortless look, you can never go wrong with a trusty claw clip. With more than 2,000 uses of the hashtag #notjustahairdresser on Instagram and Facebook and 180k views on YouTube, it’s safe to say that this statement has gotten people talking.
But, what exactly does this hashtag mean?
The campaign spotlighted 12 hairdressers who discussed their jobs and chose a few words that described them, from freethinkers to innovators to trendsetters and more. Hairdressers across London are removing the stigma behind their occupation and pushing forward the narrative that “hairdressing isn’t something you do only when other options don’t work out” (as quoted by Creative Head). They are also friends, supporters, family members, and providers and are a trusted and important relationship to many individuals who look forward to getting their hair done regularly.
Hairdressers work incredibly hard to ensure that they aren’t just coming up with new and creative ways to stay relevant and on-trend in order to impress their clients but also work to cultivate long-term and trusting relationships with them. Not only do they have to cater to their client’s demands, but they also have to be better than their competition as well as being personable, creative, fairly priced, positive, accessible, accommodating, patient and much more.
Due to the intimate nature of the job, hairdressers need to build and foster relationships with all of their clients and make an effort socially as well as creatively. There is so much that goes into their day-to-day that most of the public isn’t aware of, which is why this campaign was created.
Through the use of this hashtag and movement, hairdressers from all over London (and hopefully soon all over the UK and beyond!) are able to empower themselves and others to be proud of their profession and all the hard work they put into it.
This hashtag and movement have had an extremely positive impact on hairdressers and people in the salon industry. It has given these professionals the ability to speak up about their hard work and remove the stigma behind their professions in their own words. These individuals now have a voice, a platform and a viral trending hashtag to show off their work, dedication and commitment to the beauty and hair industry.
SJ Forbes stands with the hashtag and all the professionals who have posted it as well. Spread the hashtag by using #notjustahairdresser when you visit SJ Forbes or any other salon to keep the movement going!

This hairstyle is perfect if you want to let your hair down but also keep it out of your face. It also looks great on people with long or short hair. If you have different tones and colours in your hair, this hairstyle can show these aspects off with the twists and hair overlapping involved. A fishtail braid looks complex but is easy enough to create, make sure you start with fresh, detangled hair.
Begin with parting your hair, then sectioning the hair on your crown and back brushing it to create some volume, once you are happy with the amount of volume tie a small hair band around it which you will come back to later. Now take two small pieces of hair on the left side of your head and take a small piece of hair within one of the larger pieces and wrap it around the other large piece of hair, repeat this whilst taking small chunks of your hair down.
Repeat this process on the right side of your head then connect the two separate fishtail braids with a hairpin. You could curl or straighten the rest of your hair for your preferred look. To keep this hairstyle in place, spray a generous amount of hairspray for the finished look. We recommend using the Magic finish by Dual senses for the ultimate hold.
This hairstyle is super quick and easy to do and brings a more elevated look to the simple ponytail. For this hairstyle, all you need is a couple of hairpins and hairbands. As always, brush your hair to get all the tangles out before you begin to style.
Next, take your hair in your hands and pull it above your eye line and just use a claw clip to bring it forwards out of the way of the bottom half of your hair. Now, gather your hair at the bottom of your head and tie it into a ponytail, however high or low as you’d like.
Back to the upper half of your hair, take this out of the claw clip and begin back brushing it a little bit with a comb to create some volume for the bouncy, voluminous look. You can also add some hair volumising powder to add into the roots between the upper and lower part of your hair.
Once you are happy with the volume, split the upper piece of hair into two smaller chunks so you can hold one piece on the left of your parting on one on the right. (If you have curtain bangs, don’t forget to leave these out.) Then, take the left piece of hair and wrap it clockwise around your ponytail, then secure it with a hairpin. If you want to increase the ‘messy’ look and create more volume, gently tease your hair by pulling at strands, this will create a more bouncy look. Then do the same with the right piece of hair by tucking it around your ponytail in an anticlockwise motion, again secure it with a hairpin and tease small strands of hair for your preferred look. When happy with the ponytail, secure the overall look with some hairspray, and you will now have a gorgeous wavy voluminous ponytail.
Glamorous curls are one of our favourite hairstyles, they always look great and bring shape to your face, especially your cheekbones. This hairstyle is really easy to do, all you need is a hair brush, hair tie and a curling wand or straighteners which you can also use to curl your hair.
Firstly, tie your hair up so half is up and half is down, then curl the bottom half of your hair first by curling the hair away from your face. To intensify the curl, take small chunks of hair and curl them individually, once the bottom half of your hair is curled, give it a quick spray of hairspray, then untie the top half of your hair and take chunks individually to curl this. Remember to curl away from your face. Once this is completed put your fingers through your hair to give a bit of volume to your curls then set it with some hairspray.
This look is perfect for those with medium to long hair, this pretty hairstyle looks amazing but only takes a couple of minutes to do. Firstly, tie your hair into a simple ponytail, then get another hairband and tie in as if you're going to do another ponytail but rather than pulling all the hair through, leave the hair in a bun with most of the hair left out. Then secure the front piece of the bun down to your head with a hairpin. Now, take the hair in a half ponytail and begin plaiting it, gradually pulling pieces of hair over the pinned bun. When you have plaited all your hair, wrap the final braided hair around your bun and secure it with a pin and finally tie it into place with a hair tie.
Last but not least is this easy half-up, half-down claw clip style. To do this style you will need to separate the top half of your hair from the bottom half and take a claw clip. Twist the top half of your hair in an upward motion then place your claw clip onto the twisted bit of the hair, now adjust your hair over the claw clip to create a bouncy look. This hairstyle can be readjusted throughout the night and can be experimented with on different levels of your head.
We hope we have provided you with inspiration to create your perfect romantic look for valentines, whether you're getting ready for an evening with your gal pals or a special someone you will look and feel amazing!
]]>Similar to setting the resolution to drink more water, reduce the level of heat you use on your hair. As you know excessive use of hot styling tools, such as hair dryers, curlers or straighteners, can damage your hair leaving strands dry and prone to breakage. So we recommend swapping the hot tools for the cooler methods of shaping your hair.
However, it is important to remember that reducing heat doesn't mean giving up the heat altogether. Old school styling techniques and tools can be reintroduced such as velcro rollers and bendy hair rods can create similar looks that higher temperatures create.
I know it seems scary to give us the ease of hot tools but it will have numerous benefits in the long run!
It is important to remember in 2023 to make your routine, personal, realistic and consistent. There is no need to follow the latest hair trends and make impulse purchases, your haircare is personal and it isn't as easy as ‘one size fits all”.
The first step to creating your personalised routine consult with your hairstylist about your hair maintenance need and daily challenges. They will be able to suggest the best products and ways increase strength and moisture.
Brushing is not as simple as it may look and isn’t as simple as just grabbing any brush, however, these tools have the power to cause a lot of damage to your hair. Brushing acts as an exfoliator and works the natural oils through the hair so investing in a good quality hairbrush for both your hair and scalp is a top tip for 2023.
SJ Forbes Top Tip: The team recommend a wet brush first then a Varis Flat brush when dry for the best results!

There are various ways to style curtain bangs and you don’t always need to apply heat. To style with heat you will need a hairdryer and a medium-barrel round brush or you can style using a curling iron or a flat iron. To style using a hairdryer and medium-barrel round brush. Wrap the front pieces of hair around the brush and use your hairdryer with heat if possible to blow the hair away from the face, whilst brushing and twisting the brush in the motion away from your face and finish with a spray of hairspray to set into your desired style.
To style curtain bangs with a curling iron, flat iron, or round blow dryer hairbrush, separate your fringe from the rest of your hair. Bring the curling iron or round blow dryer hairbrush to your curtain bangs, holding your hair above your head, curl it up and in a backwards motion away from your face. Keep doing this until your hair is dry, for more volume in your curtain bangs you can add a hair roller into your fringe for about half an hour then take it out, touch up the final strands of hair, then apply hairspray where necessary.
When styling without heat all you need is a medium-barrel round brush, a roller and hairspray. Start by dampening the front pieces of your hair, use your medium-barrel round brush to brush under and upwards while twisting your bangs into a backwards ‘C’ shape, then add the hair roller under the curtain bangs until your hair is dry. Once your hair is dry take the roller out and move it into your preferred place so the hair is curly and bouncy and spray it into place with some hairspray.
When using these styling methods it is important to remember to use heat protection to protect from the damage heat can do to your hair. Try out the Hot Flex by KMS on dry hair and Multi benefit by KMS on wet hair!
Curtain bangs are a hairstyle that does not take a long time to maintain. Depending on your hair type, you most likely will need to style your curtain bangs every day because the hair volume usually collapses throughout the day. However, hairspray slows down the volume decrease phase.
Curtain bangs will look good on any shaped face, curtain bangs on round faces make your cheekbones stand out, if you have long curtain bangs this will shape round faces. Talk to your stylist about what sort of curtain bangs is best suitable for your hair type and face shape.
Curtain bangs are easy to maintain, from day to day, you can use a hair roller or curling iron and hairspray, or dry shampoo to keep your bangs in place. We recommend getting your curtain bangs trimmed every six weeks, but experimenting with different lengths of curtain bangs is a great way to find out what length best suits your face.
You may be wondering; are curtain bangs for you? Because this hairstyle suits all hair types, long and short, straight and curly, thick and thin hair, you will definitely look good. Also, this hairstyle is predicted to be a trending hairstyle in 2023 and there’s nothing wrong with hopping on the trend early. Low-effort maintenance and a bit of hairspray will give you the trendy, bouncy fringe for 2023.

We have pulled together some styles and essential tips and tricks for the festival season. All to get you ready for embracing the music, the weather and all to make you look good and feel great!
As a key part to the festival, you need to ensure you are prepared with the right equipment and we recommend grabbing the below before you head, and as part of your festival prep:
Once you have your creation kit ready, its time to decide your style! Here are some of the hottest styles for your festival season:
Space buns are a classic for a festival. They are great for accentuating thick hair, and give a strong 90’s look. Creating two equal-sized buns on your head is easy, by separating the hair down the middle and tying into two bunches, and then wrapping the hair around in a tie. This is a playful look which works on any hair length or style and keeps your hair out of your face, ready for the music.
Taking the concept of a schoolgirl braid and giving it an extra lift and tons of volume. Bubble braids are easy to master. Perfect for day 2 or 3 since hair washing as dry shampoo and some natural hair grease will help hold these for your hair. As a super versatile hairstyle idea, bubble braids can be factored into a half-up-half-down do or worked into a full up do, depending on your preference and the vibe you are going for.
Messy buns are no longer just reserved for the working from home crew. Festivals are back, and with them comes a new lease of life for the messy bun – taking half of your hair and throwing it up into an artfully creative and fun knot on top of your head. What you do with the rest of your hair is up to you – we love loose beachy waves and a hint of back brushed styling to add some drama and volume to your hair.
Arguably the best thing about festival braids is that you can do them on day one and they will likely see you through at least a couple of days, keeping your hair looking stylish, away from your face, and photo-ready at all times. Elevate your braided pigtails by weaving a colourful streak into each side or add hair gems for that little bit of sparkle.
One of the most popular festival hairdos of the 21st century. There is nothing that screams ‘classic festival vibes’ more clearly than surfer waves, with nothing more than a little wave and texture in the hair, made better with a couple of days of no water and only dry shampoo to keep it under control. The number one lowkey option.
All we do is moan and pray for sunnier weather, in those winter days we dream about it. Now we are here and of course, we Brits continue to complain a little more as hot weather can be uncomfortable as we aren’t used to it.
Sun, sand, surf, and…sweat? We definitely do not enjoy the last one, but it’s the price we pay for those long summer days. It can be pretty hard to enjoy a backyard barbecue when your bangs are sticking to your forehead or it feels like you have ten pounds of hair trapping sweat on the back of your neck. And your neatly styled curls have completely dropped even though you used hairspray!
To get this sleek bun, use a styling cream to pull all of your hair back into a low pony at the back of your head. Then, you’ll twist your hair clockwise all the way down and style the bun shape how you want. Effortless and sexy.
This ponytail works amazingly on second-day hair because it lets any natural texture or leftover curls shine. Pull your hair back into a ponytail, and don’t worry about being precise like you would with a sleek style. Use an elastic band to secure the pony. Pull a small piece of hair from underneath the ponytail and wrap it around the elastic to hide it. Bobby pin the end of that hair to your head and spray with hair spray to hold all day long.
The thing about classic looks is that they never go out of style, who doesn’t love a bouncy blow? Start by drying the hair with a large barrel brush. Start with small sections and work the heat up the entire section of hair.
Look no further than Hailey Bieber for the easiest, Cali-cool hairstyle that everyone will be rocking this season. Easy, elegant and perfect for keeping your bangs sticking to your face!
If you are like us and are thorough when making hair decisions, and like to understand as much as possible when it comes to hair. We have devised a set of frequently asked questions to help put you at ease when ahead of visiting the salon, whether that be the first time or even after several visits but you would like to know more. We even wanted to compile some of those questions you always wanted to ask your hairdresser.
Goldwell is a brand that listens, and thinks stylist. Creativity has no limits with Goldwell and SJ Forbes supports this. The portfolio of products creates stunning results and the products are innovative with superior agility. Hayley, Salon Director at SJ Forbes has worked with several brands in her career including L’Oreal, and made the decision to partner the salon with Goldwell due to the products being distinctive, more prominent and the condition being noticeably different after usage. With quality being such a key focus and part of SJ Forbes ethos, it’s difficult to always find a range which ticks every box, but this is why SJ Forbes partners with Goldwell as they truly believe in the brand.
It is essential that SJ Forbes conducts a skin patch test before appointments are taken in the salon. The main objective here is to establish if the customer will have a reaction to the products or ingredients used during a colour appointment. It is important that as stylists we reconduct these regularly and every 6 months in order to retest the skin. If you have coloured your hair at home or somewhere else in between your colour appointments with us you must have another skin test. We always ensure we are thorough with this as we put the importance of our clients first as well as the health and wellbeing.
When it comes to appointments, we ideally need to rebook your appointments every 6 weeks, minimum. This is due to the upkeep of hair length, split ends and hair health. If you have a colour or highlights which need regular upkeep then we advise to refresh the colour with us every 6-8 weeks. Therefore we advise you book after your appointment for the next visit. We also recommend booking your next few appointments around busy periods such as Christmas and Summer.
A hair consultation is the best way for you to communicate with your hairstylist and is an opportunity for us to connect with you and discuss your requirements and hair goals. We usually have an open conversation and take you through the stages and key parts of the journey and how we will achieve this.
Not always. Dry shampoo can be a lifesaver, but it’s important not to over-use it as some formulas will just lie on the scalp, causing blocked follicles, which can lead to scalp problems and hair loss in the long run. Dry shampoo The SJ team advise to use sparingly as it is prone to making hair weaker and
You wouldn’t wash your Ferrari in fairy liquid…so you wouldn’t do that to your hair, right? Cheap and accessible, of course it is easy. But what’s easy on the wallet now will just cost big money trying to reverse the damage that supermarket haircare will do later down the line. Speak to your stylist about which set of Goldwell & KMS products work best suited to your hair type.
We will be adding regularly to this blog, so watch this space.

]]>Have you noticed your hair feeling dry, distressed and in need of some TLC? Well now is the perfect time to start prepping in advance, the warmer months are around the corner where time spent in the sun, chlorinated pools and salty oceans can strip the hair from necessary oils, and left feeling limp, dry and straw like. It can also take the moisture straight out. There are many ways to combat this if you plan your haircare in advance, and use the right products. Thats not to say you may already have very dry hair from excessive heat use from curling tongs, hairdryers and straighters. Heat protection is so crucial, and we always suggest preparing your hair for the warmer months, the UV rays are coming, so make sure your mane is ready.
Our manes need to be treated with care and protection, we put our hair through a lot. Our hair and skin are affected by the weather, central heating or air-conditioning. All of these elements can leave our hair and skin dry. Our hair takes the brunt of the conditions that make it dry, those conditions might be colour treatments or heated styling. A routine of washing and conditioning is vital for keeping your hair hydrated, as well as using products which protect, nourish and replenish the nutrients in your hair.
It is more common than not that people aren’t sure what products they need to use to protect their hair and do not understand how essential having this routine is! Regardless of style and texture, it is almost certain that we want our hait to look fresh as a daisy, and as if it has been through a stylists hands each week!
Dry hair can be the bane of our lives. If you have limp, lifeless and straw like hair which is getting you down ahead of Summer? If your hair is dry, it’s because it has become depleted of lipids, a critical part of your hair shaft that protects and coats each individual strand. Lipids keep hair healthy, shiny, manageable and strong. You lose lipids as a result of normal wear and tear, usually via three common causes:
Every day factors
While nature is a life-giving force, it can be distressing on your hair. UV ray exposure, extreme heat, high humidity and wind can all suck vital moisture from hair. In the summertime, all of these forces are usually heightened - along with additional dehydrating factors, and can even boil down to keeping your body hydrated in hot weather!
Overwashing
Washing too frequently can strip hair of its protective natural oils - especially curly and textured hair, which can be more prone to dryness. During the warmer months, overwashing can occur easily as we shower more regularly.
Hot styling tools
Heat styling with a blow dryer, a flat iron or a curling iron—or all three—can have distressing effects, leaving hair looking dry and depleted. We often turn to heat styling to tame sun-frazzled strands, which can only exacerbate overly dry hair.
As you will now know, it is vital to use heat protection when styling your hair and even for blowdrying, as well as treating your hair to a hair mask to rejuvenate those natural oils, is also essential. Below we have listed two hero products that the SJ Forbes team recommend you bake into your hair care routine:

]]>A new season brings new trends, fresh ideas and new ways to colour your hair. Spring 2022 is looking brighter than ever, it's all about creating colours which are bright right through until the summer glows. As spring is now around the corner, and for those of you who live for the brighter days…what better excuse than to add a pop of colour to your hair, and stand tall just like the daffodils. Plan your hair glow ups so when the clocks go forward and the nights get lighter you are ready to embrace the longer evenings. To discover what hues will be supreme this season, then you have come to the right place!
A change in the weather means a new wardrobe and a fresh mane. Last year we saw trends rising such as grey and copper coloured hair due to limited visit to salons. This year we are predicting more adventurous and bright coloured tones, and what better time to do this than with the transition of Winter to Spring.
Sure, earthy fall hair colours are fun and winter hair colors can be edgy and bold. But when we are finally out of the dreary winter months! Spring brings with it a foray back into the world of colour that we’ve been missing for months. Welcome a fresh shade, whether you are looking for a bolder look or whether you are just looking to enhance your natural shade. SJ Forbes has collated the most popular Spring colours for you to experiment with… run, don’t walk to book your appointment today!
Peek-a-boo Colours
Wanting to try a bolder colour? This is a great place to start! By still having the same all over colour and adding small sections, this allows you to play with a vibrant hue but by adding more of an accessory when you style your hair in a specific way or style your hair up. This is also perfect for upkeep! Instead of managing full block colours, and get stylish with different elements sporadically throughout, saying it with attitude.
Luxe, Luscious Brunette
Rich, bold and full brunette colours will continue to shine on bright through to the warmer season. Adding cooler, mushroom hues with a splash of dark butterscotch with added low lights will add a more youthful feel. Perfect for that extra spring vibe!
Toasted Caramel
We saw plenty of different shades of orange and copper throughout 2021, being youthful and playful all in one, we feel that copper auburn hair with a hint of spice will be hot off the press. Bringing a hue of bold, this colour can work for anyone. Looking for a step more daring? Flaming red copper will be entering the catwalk too, elegant and flamboyant.
Ring-lighting Balayage
2021 saw an enhanced focus on face framing all year round, the SJ Forbes team were busy creating money pieces each week! This set the tone for what was to come, and we are predicted ring-lighting balayage styles this Spring. Whilst being quick, easy and not too different from your everyday look, it enhances and adds that glossy, sleek feel to a current style.
Bronde hair with dark roots
Dark roots are still here dominating, by adding colour to the ends of your hairs it adds depth to your look whilst being low maintenance and adding a melty perfection of an array of colours. Will always be timeless. Giving more lift and definition to lighter pieces, a touch of root shading can add dimension, while making locks look lived-in and effortless.
New year, new hairstyle? It’s the perfect opportunity to try something new! It’s a fresh start with a new focus. Looking for some new inspiration to be bold or to even discover something new for your profile? You’ll find that the year 2022 represents an intriguing mix of looks that are bound to spice up your hairstyle. We have even bigger plans for our hair this year, as last year we were trying to hold our lives together with hairspray for the second wave of the dreaded C word. This year we are on to bigger and better things, especially bigger hair.
We know that last year focused on low-maintenance and embracing a more no fuss, natural texture vibe. Movie nights and zoom calls were the only Friday night vibe! Now we are all expecting 2022 to be a little extra and special. Generally after the few years we have had, we are more grateful than ever to enjoy simpler things such as going out for dinner and welcoming gatherings whenever we want! And we need the right hairstyle to do this, right?
As much as we love a manicure refresh and a new makeup fix, nothing transforms you quite like a brand-new, fresh, radiant hairstyle. But, equally, there's also nothing that can make you look feel as tired as a haircut or colour that you've been wearing for far too long. So if your current hairstyle needs a dash of brave and bold for 2022, SJ are here to help! We have put together 5 of our favourite predictions across the board incorporating all things style, colour and cuts.
The SJ take on top hair trends for 2022
We love some of the hair transformations which we see every day in the salon. There are the bold hair moves, which say it with attitude, and then are the subtle and clean moves to sophisticatedly make noise. Thats why we don’t just look at colour changes, we often find a cut enhancement makes equal impact to hair styles.
Want to make a statement? Want to try something different? Regardless, we have the hottest trends below you will want to spray straight into:
Top 5:
Wispy bangs add natural bounce, and can refresh absolutely any hair style. Wanting to add some depth to your style? This style is hotter than ever right now.
The look that we have all loved for a long time which isn’t going anywhere. Style with a dramatic eye make up look and you have the ultimate sleek appearance which can be styled for a wide wray of occasions.
Fine hair? Add more volume, more texture and say it with attitude with 90’s and textured layers. Easy to achieve and a subtle enhancement to your mane. Style with some sea salt spray to give that va va voom!
The hottest trend every girl is yearning over right now! As seen on Molly-Mae and Bella Hadid. The prettiest, prim and proper low-maintenance hairstyle that enhances your face features and channels your eau natural.
Adding some face-framing and a root stretch of colour to a balayage style, creates low maintenance, effortless and chic finish, adding that fresh take to a classic look. Style alongside: choppy bangs, butterscotch blonde tones and layered with heaps of volume

]]>Well, September went in a flash?! With winding down to Autumn, we have been getting itchy feet about those autumnal leaves hitting our streets. But more importantly, we have been getting excited about all things hair colour! It’s the season!
September showed London Fashion Wee, one of the biggest fashion events in the UK. This year marked the debut of London Fashion Week as a gender-neutral event where both men's and womenswear were merged into a single digital platform. As the event is so iconic we wanted to pull together the key style takeaways from this year’s event for you to be focusing on this Autumnal season!
5 key styles SJ Forbes gave the flame emoji to this year:
From bringing it back from the old school to fresh off the runaway 2021, statement bangs are back and are here to stay. This seasons hair looks were fresh and effortless and taught us to switch it up with these simple styles. We have also paired these striking do’s with some of our top products which are essential for styling and hitting that hold.
This season’s looks have been more relaxed, accessible and we can’t get enough of some of these styles.
Bangs will always be a forever classic and is a style that is versatile and fit for all because it softens and shapes the face. By adding two sweeping parts of hair by the face it highlights and draws attention to the face and enhances the features.
2. Deep side partings
Bringing it back to the days when sweeping fringes were hotter than hot and almost everyone styled at some stage. Adding volume to the brushed over hair is key here and styling with some dramatic make-up and you are on to a win-win.
To put it simply these are bold and flattering. Bring the edge, be a showstopper and style it different this Autumn. The chopped style bob will always be a hit. The style itself is low-maintenance and will always have a universal appeal. Why not switch it up?
4. Braided beauties
Inspiring those who wish to go beyond their comfort zone. This takes some time to master, but Rome wasn’t built in a day! Try something fantastical today.
5. Low ponytails
One of our favourites! A style that can look charismatic, elegant and sophisticated all at once!
SJ Forbes can help you to achieve your desired looks and results, whether that’s a colour change or even just a low-key style. Our dedicated and advanced hair technician team are here! Book a consultation with us today.
]]>Invest in the best hair care!
Your hair is your crown, and to have the best locks, even in-between salon visits, hair care is important! At SJ Forbes we believe that it is the secret to every outstanding look, every colour and every style! We offer a range of professional solutions for beautiful hair, all with built-in protection. We believe that haircare comes from within! We partner with Goldwell and offer first-class hair care solutions to all of our clients https://www.goldwell.com/
Here are our tips and tricks when it comes to all things hair care:
1. Find a shampoo that is suited to your hair
By investing in a professional shampoo, will give your hair a thicker and fuller look. There is less silicone in salon-quality shampoo, so therefore your hair will get the nourishment it needs and it will help prevent breakages that can thin specific areas of your style!
A few of our favourites:

https://sjforbessalon.co.uk/collections/dualsenses/products/dualsenses-color-brilliance-shampoo
2. Condition and dry your hair correctly
There is a common misconception about using conditioner all over your hair, this can make your hair greasy and unmanageable. Add conditioner to the ends only, and add in a treatment/leave-in conditioner product to your routine.
We offer a range of professional hair treatment services. Make sure to ask your stylist if you are thinking about using one and we can consult you!
https://sjforbessalon.co.uk/pages/hair-treatments?_pos=1&_psq=treatment&_ss=e&_v=1.0
3. Be a little cautious when rinsing and drying your hair
When rinsing your hair, make sure that all product is rinsed off. Leftover product can leave you with buildup, and contributes to greasy and oily hair. We also recommend being cautious when drying your hair, towel dry gently and press the hair, do not rub!
4. Reasons to choose supermarket sold hair products...there isn't any! You wouldn't wash a Ferrari in fairy liquid. Invest in haircare! Check out our range of Goldwell hair services and products to support your hair needs.
5. Use a hair protector before styling your hair with heat
Sometimes curlers/straighteners can reach up to 230 degrees! If you think your hair is ok alone in that temperature, then think again. There is a need to protect our hair, and if heated styling is excessively used, it can have severe effects on your hair. Tip - spray some heat protection on some bread and pop it in the toaster...and see it with your own eyes.
6. Give your hair a break from scraping back to ponytails
Strands need a break now and again. Make sure to switch up your style with jelly hair bobbles and hair clips. Perhaps try a lower ponytail, or clipping your hair back with a clip instead of forcing your hair up high! This will avoid breakage and weakening the hair.
7. Be cautious when extracting those greys!
Pulling white / grey hair out will not make 7 more grow! But by plucking out hairs, you may damage the follicles, ultimately damaging the regrowth of hair. Look at alternative ways of hiding these, potentially by different styles or colours.
8. When drying hair...
Squeezing...and we mean squeezing, not rubbing, water out of your hair after your shampoo. This will aid and enhance your product to work harder. The water creates a barrier and dilutes the product. If you use a flannel you will get a lot more out of your products.
9. Rethink the way you wash your hair
Mintel reports that 33% of women who have changed their washing habits in the last 12 months cite worrying about damage as the top reason, so how often should you be shampooing? Well, industry experts argue that less is more. Do you really need to wash your hair every day? Over washing can be damaging for your hair, especially if your hair has been bleached. Find a dry shampoo, or style your hair up in-between days!
10. Remember the good tools, rule!
Think of your hair just like you would your skin, whatever you use will affect its appearance. By investing in salon-quality hair products, you eliminate breakage, and keep your hair looking its happiest and healthiest!

The how-tos when it comes to races hair and hats
It's all about coordination when it comes to your race day outfit, especially with your hat and races hair. We have drawn together some styles for hair with the most popular style fascinators, SJ Forbes knows the drill.
1. The wide-brimmed hat
The holy grail when it comes to hats, classy, understated and one which would go with any outfit choice. A staple when it comes to hat accessories. How to style your hair underneath? Hair down and gently tongued to create a natural wave. Let effortless be your middle name.
How to:
Blow-dry the hair to create volume, add some loose curls and brush the curls out gently to achieve a more natural wave. Finish with Goldwell texturising finishing spray.
2. The leaning modern hat
Here the detail is in the hat, with the emphasis on the hat, a minimal hairstyle completes the look. By adding in a sleek low knot, creates the perfect up do and provides pure elegance.
How to:
Pin back or roll your hair to wrap underneath your ponytail. Ensure that all hair is tucked away for a neat finish. Be certain to finish your look with KMS holding spray. Dries quickly with no residue or flaking. A race-day essential for your clutch bag!
3. The disc hat
This hat allows for style at the front near the face, and at the back where your hair will fall. The chance to show off a full circle of all things fashion, this headpiece is a gorgeous addition to your race day attire. Be prepared to turn some heads!
How to:
A chic races hair ponytail is easy to achieve and provides a soft and tasteful finish. Add some loose curls to create some volume and movement in the hair. Use your hands to brush back your ponytail into a tied knot.
Use KMS sea salt spray before styling to create some natural waves, as well as giving that just out of the ocean texture!
Easy races hair and styles to complete your look, wherever you are!
It can be so easy to let the races' hairstyle slip out of your mind, as usually the main focus is finding the ultimate dress or outfit to make a statement. There is usually so much comparing and contrasting with friends about outfits and plans, hair sometimes falls to the bottom of the pecking order!
We know that the races may look slightly different for many people, but there is still cause for a celebration - the races are some of the most iconic events of the year! And coming together and celebrating in your garden is just as convenient and still a special celebration to have with friends and family.
We have put together a few low-key races hair looks for your back garden race day:
Garden and Ascot
4. Crown headband and flowing locks
A simple but beautiful style, channelling summer garden and sleek chic! A no-brainer when it comes to style. Add some natural, tousled waves at the ends of the hair to amplify the look.
5. The alluring ponytail
A stunning look for any occasion, this up do is ideal for warmer weather. As well as showcasing the beautiful makeup which you will want to portray. Add some face-framing strands of hair around the front for a chic finish.
The summer and bank holiday season is here, and plenty of good hair days are on the horizon. Last year taught us that good hair equals a good mood. Pastel colours
There is no doubt that pastel shades are taking centre stage, and with a variety of different colours too. The best way to choose your match with pastel colours is to match the shade to your skin tone. SJ Forbes is loving this hair trend of all things Mermaid and Unicorn hair.
An array of pinks
The catwalks have proved that the ‘pretty shade’ is back and here to stay. Which type of pink? You choose. Any deep, bright or light pinks create that candy satisfaction! This hair trend makes a real statement.
Silver goddess

Balayage is a vibe, all year round
Balayage is increasingly popular with women who desire that natural and more sunkissed look. The most natural balayage results are when your S J Forbes colour expert paints the highlights on by hand, paying attention to where the sun might lift hair naturally. The bespoke results will be less uniform and more sunkissed than traditional foil highlights. As this method or highlighting is softest at the root area and more concentrated towards the ends of the hair, maintenance is low, providing an appropriate colour protection shampoo and conditioner is used together with regular treatments. Your colour hair expert will advise on what is best suited to you.
Pair your hairstyle with accessories
Whilst we are on the theme of salon experiences and experimenting, what goes better with a hairdo than a fresh set of nails?

SJ Forbes team x
]]>SJ Forbes has been using Goldwell since 2015. Hayley trained with Goldwell when she was a junior. And when Sean and Hayley were setting up, the question was 'Which brand do we form our business around?'. Hayley was certain she wanted to re-partner with Goldwell. She was working with L’Oreal in more recent times, however she really missed Goldwell and everything that the brand stood for. Instantly, both of the team noticed how different the vibrancy was, and the end result of each product. Longevity far more prominent and the condition of the hair is noticeably different when using Goldwell products. With quality being such a key focus and part of SJ Forbes ethos, it’s difficult to always find a range which ticks every box, but this is why SJ Forbes partners with Goldwell as they truly believe in the brand.
When asked why Goldwell Hayley and Sean both answered ‘the lipids used in these products for shine and condition. PH levels really look after the hair, it is almost as if a hair stylist has been put in a lab to develop products. The integration is so sleek.’ They also referred to Goldwell having a ‘stylist’ ethos and they are ‘forward thinking whilst completing it quicker than any other brand’.
One of Hayley & Seans favourite examples which practises the ‘Pure Pigments’ concept. This has been 15 years in the making with Fujifilm, which marks a revolution with Goldwell hair colour. The effect of this collaboration is that a normal colour mixed with for example, a gold colour reflector will actually project a gold shine. When the hair moves it literally shines like a gold mine! There is nothing else on the market like this, and Goldwell does not shout about their products enough! The Goldwell brand is so creative, and there is always more to be building knowledge and increasing full potential within the brand.
At SJ Forbes, the team are known as Goldwell experts, and are soul advocates of the Goldwell brand. Luke is a specialist and a colour master and the training involves demos, mood-boards and practicals. It is extensive, but it ensures your employees leave as the very best they can be. There are often chances for the team to head up to the Goldwell academy and look at specifics.

]]>Did you know that 99% of salon foils end up in landfill? We are aiming to give back, to do our bit and we are aiming to rectify that by now recycling your hair and our foil. The hair and foil that we will recycle will be re-used for gardening and composting. It’s great to know where exactly our waste will be going.
GSC is proud to own recycling their profits. 100% of any money raised from recycling raw materials or new products made from waste goes to charity. By recycling profits, every month they can support charities and organisations that are genuinely making a difference by giving back. It really is inspiring seeing the greater good here and the contributions to society! Some of the charities are the following:
So, what are SJ Forbes actually doing? We’ve decided to join the initiative by adding a small £1 ‘green fee’ to each client visit. So now when you join us in the Salon, you will be helping us save our planet too! Look out for the Green Salon Collective logo in our salons on your next visit!
